Carole is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Manchester where she leads the eScience Lab, a multidisciplinary research group focussed on the development of tools and practices that facilitate the management and analysis of complex scientific data. She is a thought leader in the field of eScience, playing a pivotal role in advancing FAIR computational workflows and FAIR research data for over 25 years.
Carole is recognised for her leadership in fostering collaborative science, promoting open and reproducible science, and advocating for the use and improvement of technology and software innovations to enable research. She has worked primarily in the Life Sciences and Biodiversity in large pan-European consortia, and has served on numerous advisory panels, technical committees and governing boards associated with scientific research councils and flagship eScience initiatives in both the UK and Europe.
Carole co-founded the Software Sustainability Institute and is currently the Head of Node of ELIXIR-UK, the national node of the European Research Infrastructure for Life Sciences (ELIXIR). She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the British Computing Society, and in 2014 was appointed CBE for services to science. She currently serves as the UK expert on the G7 Open Science Working Group.
At HDR UK, Carole is part of the UK-wide strategic leadership team and co-leads the Federated Analytics Infrastructure Programme.
